Who we are
Solid’s services began humbly, in 2007, with one employee working across the street from VicPD providing drop-in HIV and HepC support groups and daily syringe recovery around the community. In 2017, we quickly grew to address the overdose epidemic, using our long-standing, part-time volunteers to create a team of highly committed and experienced overdose response workers. Currently, the Solid team has expanded to over 150 employees and our greater membership is made up of over 3000 community members. Our staff provides experiential street support services to reduce the harms associated with poverty, drug use, and housing insecurity in Victoria and Courtenay. We operate primarily through contracts and partnerships with the City of Victoria, Ministry of Health, VIHA, BC Housing, and First Nations Health Authority. Solid provides overdose prevention services at nine sites on Vancouver Island, outreach to homeless encampments, housing case management and housing support, health access, detox/treatment, Indigenous-led cultural programs, and, most recently, overnight sheltering and drop-in access supports, services and referrals. All of these services are provided by and for people with lived experience of street life and the circumstances surrounding it, this acts as a form of vocational therapy and psycho-social healing for our members who want the opportunity to become Solid staff or volunteers.
Solid provides our services on the traditional, unceded territories of the Lkwungen (Songhees and Esquimalt) peoples. We acknowledge that we are guests on these lands. We are committed to building relationships with local nations to ensure our community work meets the needs of Indigenous peoples and settlers who are suffering from lack of access to basic needs such as housing, health, and community supports on these lands. We are committed to maintaining an organization led by, and for, many urban Indigenous People.

Board of Directors
Solid is governed by a six-member board made up by a majority of people with lived and living experience of street life and the circumstances surrounding life on the street. Individuals are elected to these positions each year at our Annual General Meeting. Our current board members are:
Julie Bell, ChairHoward Calpas, Vice-chairPaul Willcocks, TreasurerNicole Luongo, Member-at-LargeRachel Philips, Member-at-LargeJody Paterson, Member-at-LargeBoard priorities
Indigenous Leadership and Programming: Our Executive Director, Board Chair and more than half our board members are Indigenous, reflecting the high proportion of our membership who are Indigenous and street-involved. A focus this year is to continue expanding our Indigenous-led services to make sure our programs are accessible to Indigenous peoples living on the street or in precarious housing in our region.
Governance Expertise: As we continue to grow as an agency, we are looking to add three ‘board advisor’ positions to provide expertise in particular fields. Our organization is navigating new directions in programs and services; therefore, our goal is to welcome individuals from legal, physician, nursing, and accounting professions. Please contact us at board@solidvictoria.org if you are interested in joining our governance team for a 2 to 3 year term.
